Orange County Professional Firefighters Association Denounces Wasteful, Misleading Recall Petition

Nearly $3 million could fund more firefighters to protect public safety

Orange, CA – Today the Orange County Professional Firefighters Association – IAFF Local 3631 condemned the costly and misleading recall aimed at Senator Josh Newman and urged voters not to sign the petition proponents are falsely claiming will “Stop the Car Tax.” Just seven months after Senate District 29 voters chose to send Josh Newman to the California State Senate, politicians from outside the district have teamed up with the California Republican Party to fool voters.

SD 29 voters have reported that they signed what they were led to believe was a petition to stop the car tax only to learn later their signature was on a recall petition. Firefighters warned Orange County residents not to be fooled by the same lies.

“We’re disappointed to see proponents of the recall lying to taxpayers with false claims their petition will ‘Stop the Car Tax.’ We ask the community we serve to see the recall petition for what it really means – a nearly $3 million bill for taxpayers that could instead be invested in hiring more firefighters to protect the citizens of Orange County,” said Todd Baldridge, PAC Chairman, Orange County Professional Firefighters Association.

The Orange County Professional Firefighters Association – IAFF Local 3631 represents over 800 professional firefighters of the Orange County Fire Authority and the Laguna Beach Fire Department. Combined, they provide regional fire protection to 23 cities and 1.5 million citizens in Orange County, California.

“I am proud to have the Orange County Professional Firefighters Association join the growing number of local elected officials and community leaders opposed to the costly and misleading recall effort,” said Senator Josh Newman. “These men and women are truly the ones who care most about Orange County taxpayers. I couldn’t agree more that the nearly $3 million this petition will waste would be far better spent on protecting the people who run into danger to keep our communities safe.”

The Orange County Professional Firefighters Association is the latest organization to oppose the recall campaign, including numerous elected officials and community leaders from across Senate District 29.
